The classic view of the conscious mind it that it is responsible for logic and reasoning as well as so called ‘voluntary’ actions such as consciously deciding to move a limb or some other physical action.

The classic view of the subconscious mind is that it is responsible for all our so called ‘involuntary’ actions like emotional response, keeping our heart beating and other bodily functions. It is also seen as the repository of all our beliefs and memories.

I believe these definitions are over simplistic and not a good indication of how things really work.

Conscious vs. Subconscious Mind

In my youth I placed the highest value on the process of thinking with the conscious mind believing it to be superior to the subconscious mind, which I saw as instinctual and emotional. I accepted the Newtonian model of a mechanical universe where everything had measurable cause and effect, rejecting everything outside of the model including religion. I saw people that based their actions on their feelings as intellectually inferior.

Today I have the opposite opinion, now realizing that the subconscious mind is infinitely superior to the conscious mind and is what actually runs our lives anyway. Most of our responses to life’s day to day situations come from learnt patterns residing in memory.

Conscious Awareness

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) informs us that our conscious mind can only process 7 +/- 2 (seven plus or minus two) chunks of information at a time. In other words only that limited number of things can be in our conscious awareness at any given time. Our subconscious mind is taking in thousands of chunks of information all the time but internal programs filter (process of deletion, generalization and distortion) this input only delivering to the conscious mind what it determines to be relevant.

In other words we do not consciously decide what to take notice of as most of us think we do. Our awareness of the environment is determined by what the belief based programs running in our subconscious allow us to see.

Building New Neural Networks

If you have learnt to drive a car, or some other new multi-tasking skill, then you can remember how much attention it required in the beginning. There seemed to be so many things to remember and pay attention to that it often overloaded your conscious mind using all available attention chunks. But over time you needed to allocate less and less of your conscious awareness until you no longer needed to actively think about driving. Many long term drivers will have had the experience of driving some distance only to arrive and realize they could not remember how they got there.

For them, the task of driving the car and navigating has become like the so called “involuntary” actions such as regulating your heart beat. Of course, had some obstacle or dangerous situation arisen then it would have been brought to your conscious awareness and hopefully in enough time to respond appropriately.

In the same way, our responses to just about all life’s events come from stored memory and beliefs with our conscious mind acting more like a librarian, retrieving them from our neural networks using pattern recognition or memory hooks (anchors).

Speech is another good example. Many think this is a function of the conscious mind especially given the location of the area of the brain associated with language in the frontal lobe. The frontal lobe is considered the seat of consciousness, based on brain maps made by recording what areas become active when specific stimulus or activities occur. This association seems logical but it is far from conclusive.

If you have ever attempted to learn a new language then you know the effort involved in remembering the vocabulary and then structuring a sentence based on the grammatical rules of the new language. If you remember back to my example about first learning to drive a car, you will recognize that the process is the same. Once mastered, speech flows effortlessly with conscious attention focused only on the content.

Subconscious Mind Is Really In Control

The conscious mind is not the objective executive decision maker most of us would like to believe it is. Most of the responses and decisions people make use subconscious value and belief based programs based on filtered information. Their conscious mind then retrieves the most “appropriate” responses from their neural networks. As new information and feedback from the environment is encountered, it is also subject to the same subconscious value and belief based programs,  filtered and stored accordingly, thus reinforcing existing neural networks.

This reactive mode is the default for the vast majority of humanity and is not conducive to new ideas and personal growth.

Subconscious Mind Power And Creating Your Reality

Breaking free of this reactive mode requires conscious effort and is often very challenging.  You begin to examine your values and beliefs and question their validity, determining if they serve or inhibit your personal development. The biggest obstacle to change is that many consider these values and beliefs to be an intrinsic part of their identity, regardless of their validity and usefulness.

When you are able to take control of your conscious mind and start to harness the power of the subconscious mind, then you can start enjoy success in whatever endeavor you want!

In all honestly half of them I just click delete on immediately as they are not something I relate to, or they don’t inspire me, but occasionally one is a Gem or perhaps the message I needed to see at that time.

This is one such message I recently received that I have preserved storing it in my Attractor Genie Journal.

Isn’t it nice to know that you haven’t yet laughed, all that you’ll laugh? That you haven’t yet met, some of your very best friends? And that you haven’t yet dreamed, all that you’ll manifest?

That all bridges will be mended? That all sadness will be healed? And that life never ends?

That all of your challenges will be won? That all of your triumphs will be shared? And that the difference you’ll make, has already begun?

Well, it is for me, because I also know that if you don’t see these things yet, you will.

I have a long term friend that I met in high school.   In his early 20s his mother passed away from cancer and soon after his father moved the family to a new residence.  The father soon met another woman who was separated with kids and they moved in also.  They became a sort of Bradey bunch.

I really do not know the details of what happened but the end result was a very serious family rift with the younger sister of my friend refusing to even talk to her father.   This rift continued long after the father divorced the new wife who I am told was a chronic alcoholic. 

Slowly the relationship between father and his children had been healed with the exception of the youngest daughter who still refused to speak to him.  She now had her own family which her father had never met.

There was an impromptu family gathering held by my friend and they decided to invite his younger sister hopeful of some sort of reconciliation.  He rang his sister and the husband answered the phone.  He explained that there was a family gathering and that his father would be present and it would be good if they could come and try to make some sort of reconciliation. 

The husband said that they were just on the way out to a dinner but said this was more important and that they would be there. 

What happened next is truly beautiful.  The younger sister walked into the room with her husband and infant son.   The child saw his grandfather sitting on the couch and immediately ran over and jumped in his lap hugging him.

Now what is amazing is the child had never seen his grandfather before and had no idea who he was.  I think he is only 3 years old.    Even more amazing is the child is normally reserved and shy with strangers and not at all inclined to want to be cuddled.  Everybody was speechless and stunned.

This was the ultimate ice breaker.   There was no opportunity for any awkward situation to develop.  There might still be some issues not resolved but the daughter could not ignore this demonstration of love between her son and his grandfather.  The healing and reconciliation process had commenced initiated by the spontaneous expression of love by a small child not old enough to understand any of problems of the past.

 The thing to ponder is why did the child was instantly attracted to the grandfather sitting on the couch when he had no idea who he was.  

I would guess that the grandfather sat there with great expectations of seeing his grandson for the first time and feeling immense feelings of love.  These feelings were picked up by the child as soon as he entered the room. 

We are of course talking about vibrations and the Law Of Attraction.  Maybe the grandfather had day dreamed (visualized) countless times about this moment.  I can think of no other better explanation.

At first it seemed to me to be just another buzz word in the amazing mix of ideas that quantum physics explores but it kept popping into my head and slowly its real meaning started to hit me. It is an idea so exciting with so many ramifications that you will never see the world the same way again.

A month ago I came across and audio program of the same name by Mike Dooley and I knew I had to listen to it. Mike was actually featured in The Secret and has been running a website for many years with what he calls the adventurers club. The concept being that life is an adventure. He also has a mailing list called Notes from the Universe which I have been subscribing to for some time.

So I downloaded it aware that it would not really be on the topic of quantum physics but related none the less.

I have actually listened to a lot of material from many of the world’s most renowned motivational speakers and the messages of many are similar. From each I can usually gleam a new insight or some clarification of a topic I am already familiar with.

The 12 hour audio program Infinite Possibilities from Mike knocked my socks off. For me it was a lot more than a few more insights and some clarification – it actually helped me put some important jigsaw pieces for the puzzle of like together. Everything has started to make a lot more sense.

Many programs can be motivational and inspirational but this was enlightening and liberating. Abraham is not a person but rather ARE non-physical entities that communicate through Esther and jerry Hicks.   Esther claims to channel  these entities from source energy from which we all originate.   She describes what she is doing as tapping into “infinite intelligence” which is the same term that Wallace Wattle used in the last century to describe much the same concept.   

Here is a summary of some of the major concepts of Abrahams teachings:

• You are a physical extension of that which is non-physical.
• You are here in this body because you chose to be here.
• The basis of your life is freedom; the purpose of your life is joy.
• You are a creator; you create with your every thought.
• Anything that you can imagine is yours to be or do or have.
• You are choosing your creations as you are choosing your thoughts.
• The Universe adores you; for it knows your broadest intentions.
• Relax into your natural well-being. All is well.
• You are a creator of thoughtways on your unique path of joy.
• Actions to be taken and money to be exchanged are by-products of your focus on joy.
• You may appropriately depart your body without illness or pain.
• You can not die; you are everlasting life.

I had seen references from time to time about Abraham being included in the first release of the secret but later removed by Rhonda Byrne for some reason.  I had suspected that maybe Rhonda decided that using “Abraham” would be too way out there when many of the ideas of the secret were already going to challenge people.  It turns out this was just my own speculation.
